International Students
Applications open in early May.

The graduate-entry medical schools welcome applications from international students.

All applicants should download and carefully read through the Admission Guide, before applying online.

Deadlines
The closing date for receipt of Medicine, Dental Surgery and Dentistry applications – including hard copy documents – from international students at the Graduate Medical Admissions Centre at ACER was Friday 25 June 2010.

Pharmacy applications close on 27 August 2010.

Places available

Approximately 320 places are available across the eight medical schools taking international students in 2011:

»up to 20 places at ANU;
»16 at Deakin;
»19 at Flinders;
»30 at Melbourne;
»10 at Monash;
»130 at Queensland;
»80 at Sydney; and
»up to 12 at Wollongong.

These international places are additional to the Australian government-funded quota places and are not available to Australian citizens/permanent residents or New Zealand citizens.

International places are available on a full-fee paying basis, and tuition fees vary across each university. For information regarding fees please consult the relevant school.

All medical schools except for Sydney accept applications both via ACER and directly.

Pharmacy, Dental Surgery and Dentistry places are additional to these places.

The admission requirements for international students are broadly similar to those for Australian citizens, but there are some important differences. International applicants are permitted to nominate two medical school preferences only.

GAMSAT or MCAT
International applicants may elect to sit either GAMSAT or MCAT. Students who elect to sit GAMSAT must register with ACER by the published deadline in January. Students intending to sit MCAT must register with the American Association of Medical Colleges by the appropriate deadlines.
Exception: for the University of Melbourne, only international applicants resident outside Australia may sit MCAT.

For more information about MCAT please refer to the website. For the purposes of admission to graduate-entry medicine in Australia, MCAT scores are valid for two years. MCAT scores that will be accepted by Australian medical schools for 2011 entry are from the test period January 2008 to May 2010 inclusive. Results must be forwarded to ACER directly via MCAT’s ThX system to reach ACER no later than 30 June 2010.

GPA
Applicants whose Bachelor degrees are from universities outside Australia will not be able to calculate a Grade Point Average (GPA) using the conversion scales. It is however, essential that all international applicants submit official academic transcripts with their application forms. Alternatively you can arrange for your institution to post official transcripts directly to the Admissions Centre at ACER.

Foreign language transcripts must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

In all cases, sufficient details of the grading or assessment system used must be provided so that admissions committees can adequately assess the level of performance in the Bachelor degree.

Neither references nor autobiographical submissions are required, and should not be submitted.

Interview
Every effort is made to conduct interviews for shortlisted international applicants in their home country or region if this is appropriate. With the exception of Sydney and Monash, schools may conduct interviews by telephone or videoconference. (The applicant may need to attend the nearest Australian Embassy or High Commission.)

Applicants must meet all expenses associated with the interview.

Special arrangements will be made for international applicants to the Master of Pharmacy who are invited to complete the Pharmacy Case Study Scenario.

Visa status
International students who expect to have citizenship or permanent residency granted prior to the commencement of their course should contact the relevant school to discuss how this may affect their application.

Permanent Resident status is established from the date stamped on the student’s passport, or a Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, not from the date on which the application for status was made.
